ERC: Indians Select Contract of SS Ernie Clement

Indians Sign Clement to One-Year Deal

The Cleveland Indians have signed shortstop Ernie Clement to a one-year, $350,000 contract, the team announced. Clement, who was selected to the Indians' 40-man roster in November, will provide depth at shortstop behind Francisco Lindor.

Clement's Minor League Stats

Clement, 24, spent the 2019 season with the Triple-A Columbus Clippers, where he batted .271 with 11 home runs and 57 RBIs in 116 games. He also stole 21 bases and had an on-base percentage of .342.

Clement was originally drafted by the Indians in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB Draft. He has spent the past three seasons in the Indians' minor league system, batting .275 with 26 home runs and 137 RBIs in 283 games.

Indians' Shortstop Situation

The Indians have a strong shortstop in Lindor, who is a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner. However, Clement will provide some much-needed depth behind Lindor, who has played in at least 150 games in each of the past four seasons.

Clement is expected to compete for a roster spot in spring training. He could also be used as a trade chip if the Indians decide to upgrade their shortstop position.
